Locust Grove: Step Back in Time at a Historic Landmark Guide

Escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and step back in time at Locust Grove, a beautifully preserved 18th-century farm and National Historic Landmark. Once the home of Louisville founder George Rogers Clark, Locust Grove offers a glimpse into the lives of early settlers and the complexities of plantation life in Kentucky. Wander through the meticulously restored mansion, explore the surrounding grounds, and discover the stories of the people who lived and worked here. Locust Grove's history is deeply intertwined with the early development of Louisville and the Ohio River Valley. George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War hero, spent his final years at Locust Grove, living with his sister Lucy Croghan and her family. The Croghan family, prominent figures in Kentucky society, owned and operated the plantation for several generations. The site provides a unique perspective on the lives of both the Clark and Croghan families, as well as the enslaved people who were integral to the plantation's operation. Visitors to Locust Grove can take guided tours of the mansion, exploring the elegant rooms and learning about the daily lives of the Clark and Croghan families. Explore the grounds, including the gardens, outbuildings, and a reconstructed slave dwelling, to gain a deeper understanding of the plantation's history. Locust Grove also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including historical reenactments, lectures, and workshops. While Locust Grove doesn't have a dedicated restaurant, they often host events with food vendors featuring local cuisine.
