Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site Guide

Step Back in Time: Explore the Wild West at Wyoming Territorial Prison Guide

Prepare to be transported back to the rugged days of the Wild West at the Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. More than just a prison, this site offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of inmates, guards, and the social conditions of the late 19th century. Wander through the cell blocks, imagine the stories etched into the stone walls, and discover the surprising history that unfolded within these very grounds. It's a must-see for history buffs and anyone seeking a unique and immersive experience. The Wyoming Territorial Prison operated from 1872 to 1903, housing a diverse range of criminals, from cattle rustlers to train robbers. Perhaps its most famous inmate was Butch Cassidy, who served time here for horse theft. The prison's history reflects the challenges of establishing law and order in the vast and untamed Wyoming Territory. After its closure as a prison, the site served as an agricultural experiment station for the University of Wyoming before eventually being preserved as a historic site. Today, visitors can explore the original cell blocks, warden's quarters, blacksmith shop, and other buildings. Guided tours offer in-depth information about the prison's history and the lives of its inhabitants. You can even try your hand at blacksmithing! Special events and reenactments are held throughout the year, bringing the past to life. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly tied to the prison, nearby Laramie offers a variety of dining options to satisfy your appetite after your historical adventure.
