Shasta Lake Guide
Shasta Lake: California's Houseboat Capital Guide
Shasta Lake, nestled in Northern California, is a stunning reservoir offering a diverse range of recreational activities and breathtaking scenery. Formed by the Shasta Dam, it's the state's largest reservoir and a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a relaxing escape. With its intricate shoreline, numerous inlets, and surrounding mountains, Shasta Lake provides a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable adventures. While Shasta Lake itself doesn't have a long, storied history like some historical sites, its creation is tied to the construction of the Shasta Dam in the 1930s and 40s. The dam was built to provide water for irrigation and power generation, transforming the landscape and creating the lake we know today. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, and remnants of their presence can still be found in the surrounding areas. Visitors to Shasta Lake can enjoy a wide array of activities. Houseboating is incredibly popular, allowing you to explore the lake's many coves and inlets at your own pace. Other water sports include swimming, fishing (Shasta Lake is known for its bass fishing), waterskiing, wakeboarding, and kayaking. Hiking trails abound in the surrounding Shasta-Trinity National Forest, offering stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Several marinas around the lake offer boat rentals, supplies, and other services.
Transportation
The best way to reach Shasta Lake is by car. From Redding, take Interstate 5 north to Lakehead. Several exits provide access to different parts of the lake and various marinas. Public transportation options are limited in this area.
