The Wave: Ride the Sandstone Swells of Arizona Guide

Prepare to be mesmerized by The Wave, a breathtaking sandstone formation located in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness near Kanab, Utah (though often associated with Arizona). This geological marvel is a photographer's dream and a hiker's challenge, boasting undulating, colorful patterns carved by wind and water over millions of years. Securing a permit to witness this natural wonder is a feat in itself, making the experience all the more rewarding. The Wave's formation began during the Jurassic period, around 190 million years ago. Shifting sand dunes gradually solidified into sandstone, and subsequent erosion by wind and rain sculpted the iconic wave-like shapes we see today. The vibrant colors are due to iron oxide deposits within the sandstone layers, creating a stunning visual spectacle that changes with the light. The delicate nature of the formation means access is strictly controlled to preserve its beauty for future generations. The primary activity at The Wave is, of course, photography and hiking. The hike to The Wave is approximately 6.4 miles roundtrip and considered moderately strenuous, requiring navigation skills and a good level of fitness. Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a map (provided with your permit). While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly associated with The Wave, the nearby town of Kanab offers a variety of dining options, from casual cafes to restaurants serving Southwestern cuisine. Be sure to try some local Navajo tacos for a taste of the region.

Transportation

Access to The Wave requires a permit and a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended to reach the Wire Pass Trailhead. From Kanab, drive east on US-89 for approximately 38 miles. Turn north onto House Rock Valley Road (BLM 1065). The trailhead is about 8.3 miles down this unpaved road. Road conditions can vary significantly depending on the weather, so check with the BLM office in Kanab for current conditions before heading out.
