Soda Dam Guide
Soda Dam: A Geological Wonder of Jemez Springs Guide
Prepare to be amazed by Soda Dam, a truly unique geological formation just outside Jemez Springs! This natural dam, sculpted over millennia by mineral-rich spring water, is a testament to the power and artistry of nature. Imagine a bridge of rock spanning the Jemez River, a testament to the slow, patient work of mineral deposition. It's a photographer's dream and a fascinating stop for anyone interested in geology or simply seeking a beautiful and unusual sight. The Soda Dam's formation began with hot springs bubbling up through the earth, carrying dissolved calcium carbonate. As the water flowed over the riverbed, the calcium carbonate precipitated out, slowly building up layers of travertine. Over time, this process created the impressive dam we see today. While the dam was once much larger, a portion was unfortunately blasted away in the early 20th century to improve road access. Despite this alteration, it remains a captivating landmark. While you can no longer walk across the Soda Dam (for safety reasons), it's still a fantastic place to visit. Take some time to admire the intricate patterns and textures of the travertine. The Jemez River offers opportunities for fishing and wading (check local regulations). The area surrounding the dam is also perfect for a picnic lunch. Remember to bring your camera to capture the beauty of this natural wonder!
