Petrified Dunes Trail Guide
Walk on Ancient Sands: Petrified Dunes Trail Guide
Step back in time on the Petrified Dunes Trail in Snow Canyon State Park. This easy to moderate hike takes you across rolling hills of Navajo sandstone that have been frozen in time, resembling giant, petrified sand dunes. It's a unique and fascinating landscape that offers a glimpse into the geological history of the area. The "dunes" you see are not actually petrified sand in the traditional sense. They are Navajo sandstone formations that were once active sand dunes millions of years ago. Over time, these dunes were buried, compacted, and cemented together by minerals, transforming them into solid rock. Subsequent erosion has exposed these ancient dunes, creating the surreal landscape we see today. The Petrified Dunes Trail is perfect for hiking, exploring, and photography. The relatively flat terrain makes it accessible to a wide range of visitors. Children will enjoy climbing and exploring the unique rock formations. The trail also offers stunning views of the surrounding canyon and mountains. Remember to stay on designated trails to protect the fragile sandstone formations. While not directly related to the trail, the St. George area offers a variety of dining options, including local favorites featuring Southwestern flavors.
