San Jacinto Peak, the second highest peak in Southern California, offers breathtaking views and a challenging adventure for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The history of San Jacinto Peak is intertwined with the history of the Cahuilla Indians, who considered the mountain sacred. European settlers later named the peak after Saint Hyacinth. The construction of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in the 1960s made the peak more accessible to the public, opening up a world of recreational opportunities. There are several ways to experience San Jacinto Peak. The most popular option is to take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to Mountain Station, which is located at an elevation of 8,516 feet. From there, a relatively easy 5.5-mile hike leads to the summit. Alternatively, experienced hikers can tackle the challenging trails that ascend from Idyllwild. Activities include hiking, rock climbing, camping (with permits), and enjoying the stunning views. In winter, the peak is often covered in snow, offering opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.
Transportation
To reach the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway (the most common access point), you'll need a car. From Idyllwild, drive east on Highway 243 to Highway 74, then north on Highway 111 to Palm Springs. Follow signs to the Tramway. Parking is available at the Tramway base station. Alternatively, you can hike to the peak from Idyllwild, but this requires significant hiking experience and preparation. Trailheads are accessible from various points within Idyllwild.
