Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park Guide
Soar Above the Hudson: A Pedestrian Bridge with Breathtaking Views Guide
Welcome to the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, a unique and unforgettable experience! This remarkable pedestrian bridge, spanning the majestic Hudson River, offers unparalleled panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a scenic stroll, the Walkway provides a memorable adventure for all. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty and grandeur of the Hudson Valley from a truly unique vantage point. Originally opened in 1889 as a railroad bridge, the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge played a vital role in connecting the eastern and western United States. It was once the longest bridge in the world. After a devastating fire in 1974, the bridge remained abandoned for decades. Thanks to the dedication of local communities and organizations, it was transformed into the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, reopening to the public in 2009 as the world's longest elevated pedestrian bridge. Visitors can enjoy walking, running, or biking across the 1.28-mile span. Take in the stunning views of the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, and the surrounding towns. The park also hosts various events throughout the year, including guided tours, concerts, and festivals. Consider packing a picnic to enjoy at one of the designated seating areas along the Walkway. Don't forget your camera to capture the breathtaking scenery!
Transportation
While there isn't direct public transportation to the Walkway's entrances, you can take the Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line to the Poughkeepsie station. From there, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to either the Poughkeepsie or Highland entrance of the Walkway. Alternatively, consider biking from the train station for a scenic ride.
