Valley of the Goblins Guide

Explore a Martian Landscape: Goblin Valley State Park Guide

Step into another world at Goblin Valley State Park, a surreal landscape dotted with thousands of bizarre rock formations known as "goblins." These oddly shaped sandstone hoodoos, sculpted by wind and water over millions of years, create a playground for the imagination and a photographer's dream. Located in the heart of Utah's high desert, Goblin Valley offers a unique and unforgettable experience. The geological history of Goblin Valley is fascinating. The goblins are formed from Entrada sandstone, deposited during the Jurassic period. Over millions of years, the sandstone was eroded by wind and water, creating the unique shapes we see today. The varying hardness of the sandstone layers contributes to the goblins' distinctive mushroom-like appearance. The park was officially designated as a state park in 1964, protecting this unique geological wonder for future generations. Goblin Valley offers a variety of activities for visitors of all ages. Exploring the valley floor and wandering among the goblins is the most popular activity. There are no designated trails within the valley, allowing visitors to freely roam and discover their own favorite goblins. Hiking, camping, stargazing, and canyoneering are also popular activities in the park. The park's dark skies make it an excellent location for stargazing. For a unique experience, consider staying overnight in one of the park's yurts.
