Gunlock State Park: Red Rock Beauty and Water Recreation Guide
Escape to Gunlock State Park, a hidden gem in southwestern Utah, known for its stunning red rock scenery and refreshing reservoir. This park offers a variety of outdoor activities, from swimming and boating to hiking and picnicking. Whether you're seeking a relaxing day by the water or an adventurous exploration of the surrounding landscape, Gunlock State Park has something for everyone. Gunlock State Park is named after William "Gunlock Bill" Hamblin, an early pioneer and prominent figure in the area's history. The Gunlock Reservoir was created in 1970 with the construction of the Gunlock Dam, providing irrigation water for local agriculture and creating a recreational oasis. The park's red rock formations are composed of Navajo sandstone, the same rock that forms many of the iconic landscapes in southern Utah. Visitors to Gunlock State Park can enjoy a variety of activities. The reservoir is perfect for swimming, boating, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Fishing is also popular, with opportunities to catch bass, catfish, and bluegill. Several hiking trails wind through the park, offering stunning views of the reservoir and the surrounding red rock canyons. Picnicking areas are available for those who want to relax and enjoy the scenery. During periods of high rainfall, the overflow from the reservoir creates a spectacular waterfall cascading over the dam, a sight that draws visitors from far and wide.
