Kansas Wetlands Education Center Guide
Discover the Wonders of the Wetlands: A Journey into Kansas' Aquatic Heart Guide
Welcome to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC), your gateway to understanding and appreciating the vital role wetlands play in our ecosystem. Located adjacent to the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area, one of the most significant shorebird migration stopover points in North America, the KWEC offers an immersive and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Prepare to be amazed by the diverse flora and fauna that call these unique habitats home, and learn about the importance of wetland conservation. The Cheyenne Bottoms, a vast network of marshes and shallow lakes, has a rich history dating back thousands of years. Indigenous peoples relied on the area for sustenance and resources. In the 20th century, efforts were made to drain portions of the Bottoms for agriculture, but thankfully, conservation efforts prevailed, recognizing the critical importance of this wetland ecosystem for migratory birds and other wildlife. The KWEC was established to further educate the public about the value of these wetlands and promote their preservation. At the KWEC, you can embark on a self-guided tour through interactive exhibits that explore the ecology, hydrology, and history of the Cheyenne Bottoms. Observe a variety of bird species from the observation tower, hike along nature trails that wind through the wetlands, and participate in educational programs and workshops. Don't forget your binoculars and camera to capture the stunning scenery and wildlife encounters. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the KWEC, consider supporting local restaurants in Great Bend to experience the flavors of Kansas.
