Goosenecks Overlook Guide
Goosenecks Overlook: Witness the San Juan River's Meandering Majesty Guide
Goosenecks State Park is home to one of the most dramatic examples of an entrenched river meander in the world. From the Goosenecks Overlook, visitors can gaze down upon the San Juan River as it carves its way through the desert landscape, winding back and forth in a series of horseshoe-shaped bends. The overlook provides a stunning panoramic view of this geological wonder, showcasing the power of erosion over millions of years. The San Juan River's unique course is a result of the Colorado Plateau's uplift. As the plateau rose, the river maintained its original course, cutting deeper and deeper into the rock. Over time, this process created the dramatic goosenecks, where the river travels over six miles to advance only one and a half miles in a straight line. The park was established to protect this unique geological feature and provide access for visitors to appreciate its beauty. The primary activity at Goosenecks State Park is enjoying the view from the overlook. Several viewpoints offer different perspectives of the goosenecks. Photography is a popular pastime, capturing the dramatic landscape in various lighting conditions. Camping is available at the park, allowing visitors to spend the night under the stars and experience the tranquility of the desert. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the park, nearby towns offer dining options.
