A Plantation with a Past: Discover History at Chatham Manor Guide

Step back in time at Chatham Manor, a grand Georgian-style mansion overlooking the city of Fredericksburg and the Rappahannock River. More than just a beautiful house, Chatham is a place steeped in history, having witnessed pivotal moments in American history from the colonial era through the Civil War. Prepare to be transported to another era as you explore the house and grounds, and learn about the lives of those who lived and worked here. Built in 1771 by William Fitzhugh, Chatham Manor was a working plantation for many years. It hosted prominent figures like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe. During the Civil War, Chatham served as a Union headquarters, and Abraham Lincoln visited the house on several occasions. Clara Barton also tended to wounded soldiers here. The house and grounds were witness to some of the most brutal fighting of the war, and the landscape still bears the marks of those battles. After the war, the house fell into disrepair before being restored in the 1920s. It is now part of the National Park Service. Visitors to Chatham Manor can take guided tours of the house to learn about its history and architecture. Explore the beautiful gardens, which offer stunning views of Fredericksburg and the Rappahannock River. Walk the grounds and reflect on the events that took place here during the Civil War. The visitor center offers exhibits and information about the history of the house and the surrounding area. While Chatham Manor doesn't have a specific culinary tradition associated with it, Fredericksburg offers a variety of dining options, from traditional Southern cuisine to modern American fare. Be sure to explore the local restaurants and cafes during your visit.
