Lava River Cave Guide
Lava River Cave: Explore a Subterranean Wonderland Guide
Venture into the depths of the earth at the Lava River Cave, a fascinating geological wonder just a short drive from Flagstaff. This mile-long lava tube offers a unique opportunity to explore a subterranean world formed thousands of years ago by flowing lava. Prepare for a cool and dark adventure as you descend into this natural tunnel, a stark contrast to the sunny Arizona landscape above. It's a must-see for anyone interested in geology, adventure, or simply experiencing something truly unique. The Lava River Cave was formed approximately 700,000 years ago when molten lava erupted from a nearby volcanic vent. As the outer layers of the lava flow cooled and hardened, the molten lava continued to flow beneath, eventually draining away and leaving behind the hollow tube we see today. Over time, the cave has remained relatively unchanged, offering a glimpse into the volcanic past of the region. Exploring the Lava River Cave is an adventure in itself. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes, warm layers (the cave maintains a cool temperature year-round), and at least two sources of light per person. The cave floor is uneven and rocky, so watch your step! There are no guided tours, so you're free to explore at your own pace. Remember to pack out everything you pack in and leave no trace of your visit. It's a self-guided experience that allows you to connect with nature in a truly unique way.
