Twenty Mule Team Canyon Guide
Drive Through a Painted Desert: Twenty Mule Team Canyon Guide
Experience the otherworldly beauty of Twenty Mule Team Canyon, a scenic drive through a maze of eroded badlands. This short, one-way dirt road winds through a landscape of vibrant yellows, browns, and whites, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience. The canyon's name pays homage to the twenty-mule teams that once hauled borax across the harsh desert terrain. Prepare to be transported to another planet as you navigate this unique and captivating landscape. The history of Twenty Mule Team Canyon is intertwined with the borax mining industry that thrived in Death Valley in the late 19th century. Borax, a mineral used in various industrial and household products, was abundant in the area. The Harmony Borax Works, located near Furnace Creek, extracted and processed the borax. The twenty-mule teams, consisting of eighteen mules and two horses, were used to transport the borax across the desert to the nearest railroad siding, a grueling journey that took several days. While the mining operations are long gone, the canyon serves as a reminder of this important chapter in Death Valley's history. The primary activity here is driving! The one-way dirt road is relatively short, but there are several pullouts along the way where you can stop to take photos and admire the scenery. The canyon is particularly stunning at sunrise and sunset when the light casts long shadows and intensifies the colors of the landscape. While hiking is possible, there are no designated trails, so be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Remember to bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities within the canyon. While not a culinary destination, consider packing a picnic to enjoy amidst the stunning scenery.
