Descend to the Depths: Cleetwood Cove Trail Guide

Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal and maintained trail that leads down to the shore of Crater Lake. This steep, strenuous trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the lake up close, swim in its pristine waters, and take a boat tour to Wizard Island. It's a challenging but rewarding experience for adventurous visitors. The trail was constructed in the early 20th century to provide access to the lake for recreational purposes. It descends 700 feet in just over a mile, making it a demanding hike both down and back up. The trail is typically open from mid-June to late October, depending on snow conditions. Visitors can hike down to the lake, swim (the water is very cold!), fish (with a permit), or take a boat tour to Wizard Island. Boat tours offer a chance to explore the island's volcanic features and enjoy different perspectives of the lake. There are no culinary traditions directly associated with Cleetwood Cove Trail, so bring your own water and snacks.
