Cleetwood Cove Trail: Plunge into the Depths of Crater Lake Guide
The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal access point to the shore of Crater Lake, offering a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with this stunning natural wonder. This steep, 1.1-mile trail descends 700 feet to the lake's edge, where you can swim in the crystal-clear water, take a boat tour to Wizard Island, or simply marvel at the sheer beauty of the caldera. It's a challenging hike, but the reward of experiencing Crater Lake from its shore is well worth the effort. Crater Lake was formed approximately 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama, a massive volcano, erupted and collapsed, creating a deep caldera. Over time, rainwater and snowmelt filled the caldera, forming the lake we see today. The Cleetwood Cove Trail was constructed in the early 20th century to provide access to the lake for research and recreation. It's named after Cleetwood, a steamboat that was used to transport visitors and supplies to Wizard Island. The trail has been maintained and improved over the years, but it remains a challenging hike due to its steep grade and rocky terrain. The primary activity at Cleetwood Cove is swimming in Crater Lake. The water is incredibly pure and cold, typically around 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius), even in the summer. Boat tours to Wizard Island depart from Cleetwood Cove, offering a chance to explore the volcanic cinder cone that rises from the lake's surface. Fishing is also permitted in Crater Lake, but a valid Oregon fishing license is required. Remember to bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes, as the trail is steep and rocky. There are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Cleetwood Cove, but the Crater Lake Lodge and other facilities within the park offer dining options, featuring American cuisine with a focus on regional ingredients.
Transportation
Cleetwood Cove Trailhead is located on the north side of Crater Lake, along the Rim Village Drive. From Rim Village, follow the Rim Village Drive north for approximately 6 miles. Parking at the trailhead is limited, especially during peak season, so arrive early. During the summer months, a shuttle service may operate to the trailhead from other locations within the park (check the park's website for current schedules).
