Lake Nighthorse Guide

Adventure Awaits: Discover the Beauty and Recreation of Lake Nighthorse Guide

Escape the ordinary and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Lake Nighthorse, a stunning reservoir nestled amidst the rugged landscapes of southwestern Colorado. This pristine lake offers a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing a wide array of recreational activities against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery. Whether you're seeking thrilling water sports, peaceful fishing, or simply a tranquil escape, Lake Nighthorse has something for everyone. Lake Nighthorse is a relatively new reservoir, created in 2009 as part of the Animas-La Plata Water Project. It was named in honor of Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a former U.S. Senator from Colorado and a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe. The lake's primary purpose is to provide water storage for agricultural, municipal, and industrial uses, but it has quickly become a popular destination for recreation. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, mesas, and the majestic peaks of the San Juan Mountains in the distance. Lake Nighthorse is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and waterskiing on the crystal-clear waters. Anglers can cast their lines for a variety of fish species, including trout, bass, and kokanee salmon. Hiking and biking trails wind along the shoreline, offering stunning views of the lake and surrounding landscape. Picnic areas and campgrounds provide opportunities for relaxation and overnight stays. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with the lake itself, nearby Durango offers a diverse culinary scene with restaurants catering to all tastes.
