Shore Acres State Park Guide
Shore Acres State Park: Where Gardens Meet the Pacific's Fury Guide
Prepare to be captivated by Shore Acres State Park, a jewel on the Oregon Coast! This isn't your average park; it's a dramatic blend of meticulously manicured gardens perched atop rugged sandstone cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Imagine strolling through vibrant flower beds, exploring a serene Japanese-style garden, and then witnessing the raw power of crashing waves – all in one place. Shore Acres is a must-see for nature lovers, garden enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a dose of coastal drama. The story of Shore Acres is as captivating as its scenery. Once the estate of timber baron Louis J. Simpson, the park's history is one of opulence and eventual decline. Simpson transformed the property into a lavish showcase, complete with a grand mansion, exotic plants, and even a swimming pool carved into the rock. Sadly, the mansion was destroyed by fire in 1921, and the estate eventually fell into disrepair. Thankfully, the state of Oregon acquired the property in 1942, preserving its beauty for generations to come. Today, the formal gardens are meticulously maintained, a testament to Simpson's original vision. Shore Acres offers a variety of activities to suit every interest. Wander through the formal gardens, admiring the seasonal blooms and meticulously sculpted hedges. Explore the Japanese-style garden, a tranquil oasis of ponds, bridges, and carefully placed stones. During the winter months (typically Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve), the park transforms into a dazzling holiday light display, a truly magical experience. Don't forget to venture down to the cliff's edge to witness the spectacular wave action, especially during storms. Keep an eye out for seals, whales, and other marine life! While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the park itself, nearby Coos Bay offers a variety of seafood restaurants where you can savor the flavors of the Oregon Coast.
