Brucemore: Step Back in Time at Cedar Rapids' Grand Estate Guide

Whether you're an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Brucemore offers a captivating experience for all. The story of Brucemore begins in 1884 when Caroline Sinclair, widow of pioneer industrialist T.M. Sinclair, commissioned the construction of the mansion. After her death, the property was purchased by George Bruce Douglas, head of Quaker Oats, in 1906, giving the estate its name. The Douglas family significantly expanded the gardens and added many of the architectural details we see today. In 1937, Irene Douglas, George's daughter, inherited Brucemore and transformed it into a vibrant center for arts and culture, hosting countless gatherings and supporting local artists. Upon her death in 1981, Irene bequeathed Brucemore to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, ensuring its preservation for future generations. A visit to Brucemore offers a variety of engaging activities. Take a guided tour of the mansion to learn about the families who lived there and the historical events that shaped their lives.
