The Waterpocket Fold is a nearly 100-mile long warp in the Earth's crust, forming the defining feature of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. The Waterpocket Fold is a classic monocline, a geological structure where rock layers are folded in a single direction. It formed approximately 50 to 70 million years ago during the Laramide Orogeny, a period of mountain building in western North America. The uplift caused the rock layers to buckle and fold, creating the dramatic landscape we see today. The name "Waterpocket Fold" comes from the numerous depressions or "waterpockets" that have eroded into the sandstone, collecting rainwater and providing a vital water source in the arid environment. Visitors to the Waterpocket Fold can enjoy a variety of activities. Scenic drives along Highway 24 and the unpaved Notom-Bullfrog Road offer stunning views of the fold's geological formations. Hiking trails range from easy strolls to challenging climbs, allowing visitors to explore canyons, arches, and overlooks. Popular hikes include Hickman Bridge Trail, Cohab Canyon Trail, and Cassidy Arch Trail. The Fruita orchards, planted by Mormon pioneers in the late 19th century, offer a unique culinary experience. Visitors can pick their own fruit (in season) and purchase homemade pies, jams, and other treats at the Gifford House.
Transportation
Capitol Reef National Park is located in south-central Utah. The main access point is via Highway 24, which runs east-west through the park. The Waterpocket Fold is visible from various points along Highway 24. For access to the Notom-Bullfrog Road, which runs along the eastern side of the fold, take the turnoff south of the Fruita Campground. Be aware that the Notom-Bullfrog Road is unpaved and may require a high-clearance vehicle in some sections. Check road conditions before you go.
