Whether you're an avid birder, a nature photographer, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, the Wister Unit promises an unforgettable experience. Prepare to be captivated by the sights and sounds of this vital ecosystem. The Imperial Wildlife Area, including the Wister Unit, was established to mitigate the impacts of agricultural development on wildlife in the Imperial Valley. The area provides crucial habitat for migratory birds, particularly waterfowl, that rely on the Salton Sea and surrounding wetlands during their annual journeys along the Pacific Flyway. The Wister Unit specifically focuses on managing water resources to create optimal conditions for these birds, ensuring their survival and contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at the Wister Unit. Birdwatching is a major draw, with opportunities to spot species like snow geese, ducks, herons, and egrets. Hiking trails wind through the area, allowing for closer encounters with nature. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during specific seasons, subject to regulations. Fishing is also available in certain ponds and canals. Remember to bring your binoculars, camera, and a sense of adventure!
Transportation
Due to its remote location, the Wister Unit is best accessed by car. From Calipatria, take Highway 111 south. Turn east onto Wister Road and follow the signs to the Wister Unit headquarters. Public transportation options are extremely limited in this area.
