Mirror Lake Trail Guide
Mirror Lake Trail: A Gem of the Idaho Panhandle Guide
Escape into the serene beauty of the Idaho Panhandle with a hike along the Mirror Lake Trail. This moderate trail offers stunning views of a pristine alpine lake reflecting the surrounding forests and mountains. It's a perfect day trip for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Prepare to be captivated by the tranquility and natural splendor of this hidden gem. While Mirror Lake itself doesn't have a deep historical narrative, the surrounding area is rich in logging and mining history. The trail winds through forests that were once actively logged, and remnants of old mining operations can be found in the nearby mountains. The trail itself was likely established to provide access to the lake for recreation and enjoyment of the natural environment. The primary activity at Mirror Lake is, of course, hiking! The trail is approximately 6 miles roundtrip and is considered moderately challenging due to some elevation gain. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy by the lake's edge, or bring your fishing gear and try your luck at catching some trout. Photography enthusiasts will find endless opportunities to capture the stunning scenery. Swimming is possible, but be aware that the water can be quite cold, even in the summer months. There are no specific culinary traditions associated with the lake itself, but Bonners Ferry offers a variety of dining options after your hike.
Transportation
The Mirror Lake Trailhead is located approximately 15 miles northeast of Bonners Ferry. From Bonners Ferry, take Highway 95 north to Highway 2. Turn east onto Highway 2 and follow it for about 10 miles. Turn north onto Mirror Lake Road (Forest Service Road #244) and follow it for about 5 miles to the trailhead. The road is generally well-maintained but can be rough in places, so a vehicle with decent clearance is recommended. Parking is available at the trailhead.
