Calico Ghost Town: Relive the Wild West! Guide
Step back in time and experience the allure of the Wild West at Calico Ghost Town! This former silver mining town, now a San Bernardino County Regional Park, offers a fascinating glimpse into California's rich history. Explore the preserved buildings, pan for gold, and imagine life as a pioneer in this authentic ghost town setting. It's a unique and entertaining destination for history buffs, families, and anyone seeking a taste of the Old West. Calico's history dates back to 1881 when silver was discovered in the surrounding mountains. The town quickly boomed, attracting miners, merchants, and families seeking their fortune. At its peak, Calico boasted a population of over 3,500 residents and over 500 mines. However, the silver boom was short-lived, and by the mid-1890s, the town began to decline. By the early 20th century, Calico was virtually abandoned. In the 1950s, Walter Knott, the founder of Knott's Berry Farm, purchased Calico and began restoring it to its former glory. He later donated the town to San Bernardino County, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, Calico Ghost Town offers a variety of activities for visitors. Take a stroll down Main Street and explore the historic buildings, including the schoolhouse, general store, and saloon. Pan for gold and try your luck at striking it rich. Ride the Calico Odessa Railroad for a scenic tour of the town. Catch a gunfight show and witness a thrilling reenactment of a Wild West shootout. For a spooky experience, take a ghost tour and learn about the town's haunted history. While Calico doesn't have a specific culinary tradition, you can enjoy classic American fare at the town's restaurants and snack shops. Don't miss the opportunity to try some delicious fudge or homemade ice cream!
