Clark Bridge (also known as the Super Bridge) Guide

Marvel at the Super Bridge: A Gateway to Illinois Guide

The Clark Bridge, affectionately known as the "Super Bridge," is a striking cable-stayed bridge spanning the Mississippi River between Alton, Illinois, and West Alton, Missouri. It's a modern marvel of engineering and a beautiful sight, especially at night when illuminated. Whether you're driving across or admiring it from the riverfront, the bridge offers stunning views and a memorable experience. Completed in 1994, the Clark Bridge replaced an older bridge that had become inadequate for the increasing traffic volume. Its design, featuring two prominent towers and a network of cables, was chosen for its aesthetic appeal and structural efficiency. The bridge is named after William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark expedition, who explored the area in the early 19th century. Visitors can enjoy the bridge by driving or walking across it (sidewalks are available). The Alton Riverfront Park offers excellent vantage points for photographing the bridge, especially at sunset. Consider taking a riverboat cruise for a unique perspective. While Alton doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied directly to the bridge, the city offers a variety of dining options, from casual eateries to upscale restaurants, many featuring local ingredients and regional specialties.
