St. Andrew's Church Guide
St. Andrew's Church: A Baroque Masterpiece Overlooking Kyiv Guide
Perched atop a steep hill overlooking the historic Podil district, St. Andrew's Church is an iconic symbol of Kyiv and a must-see for any visitor. This stunning Baroque church, with its vibrant turquoise facade and intricate detailing, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the Dnipro River. Prepare to be captivated by its architectural beauty and rich history. Commissioned by Empress Elizabeth of Russia and designed by the renowned Italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli (who also designed the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg), St. Andrew's Church was built between 1747 and 1754. Legend has it that the hill on which the church stands was once washed by the sea, and St. Andrew the Apostle prophesied the founding of a great Christian city here. The church has survived fires, wars, and periods of neglect, but has always been restored to its former glory. Visiting St. Andrew's Church offers a chance to step back in time and admire the exquisite Baroque architecture. Climb the winding staircase inside to reach the upper level and marvel at the ornate interior, including the gilded iconostasis. Afterwards, stroll along Andriivskyi Descent, the charming cobblestone street leading down from the church, lined with art galleries, souvenir shops, and cafes. While not directly related to the church, the surrounding area offers a taste of traditional Ukrainian cuisine, with many restaurants serving varenyky (dumplings), borscht (beet soup), and other local specialties.

The easiest way to reach St. Andrew's Church is by taking the metro to Kontraktova Ploshcha station (Blue Line). From there, it's a pleasant (but uphill!) walk along Andriivskyi Descent.
