The Close consists of two rows of houses, each with its own garden, facing each other across a cobbled street. The houses are deliberately built with a slight optical illusion: the houses on the south side appear longer than those on the north when viewed from the entrance, creating a sense of perspective and grandeur. At either end of the Close stand the Chapel and the Hall, completing this self-contained community. Today, Vicar's Close remains a residential street, with some houses still occupied by members of the Cathedral community. Transportation
From Wells Bus Station, Vicar's Close is a short walk (approximately 5-10 minutes). Head north on Princes Road, then turn left onto the High Street. Continue straight onto Market Place, then turn right onto Chain Gate. Vicar's Close will be on your left, adjacent to Wells Cathedral.
