Knightshayes Court Guide
Knightshayes Court: A Victorian Gothic Revival Masterpiece Guide
Step back in time and immerse yourself in the grandeur of Knightshayes Court, a stunning Victorian Gothic Revival house nestled in the heart of the Devon countryside. This National Trust property offers a captivating glimpse into the life of the Heathcoat-Amory family, who commissioned the house in the late 19th century. Prepare to be enchanted by its dramatic architecture, intricate interiors, and sprawling gardens. Knightshayes Court's history is intertwined with the Heathcoat-Amory family, industrialists who made their fortune in lace manufacturing. The house was designed by William Burges, a renowned architect known for his flamboyant and imaginative style. However, the family found Burges's designs too extravagant, leading to a strained relationship and ultimately, the completion of the house by another architect. Despite the changes, Knightshayes retains many of Burges's original features, including the Great Hall and the Chapel. The gardens, initially designed in a formal style, were later transformed into a more naturalistic landscape by Sir John Heathcoat-Amory in the 20th century. A visit to Knightshayes Court offers a variety of activities. Explore the opulent rooms of the house, admiring the intricate details and learning about the family's history. Wander through the beautiful gardens, discovering hidden pathways, vibrant flowerbeds, and tranquil water features. Take a guided tour to delve deeper into the history and architecture of the house. Children will enjoy the play area and the opportunity to explore the natural surroundings. The on-site cafe offers refreshments and light meals, perfect for a relaxing break during your visit. While Knightshayes doesn't have a specific culinary tradition tied to it, the cafe often features locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes, reflecting the flavors of Devon.
