Dinas Island Guide
Dinas Island: Not an Island, But a Coastal Paradise! Guide
Prepare to be surprised! Dinas Island isn't actually an island, but a peninsula jutting out into the Irish Sea, offering breathtaking coastal walks and panoramic views. Located a short drive from Tenby, this hidden gem provides a stunning escape into nature, with dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and an abundance of wildlife. It's a must-visit for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking tranquility. Despite its name, Dinas Island has a rich history. The name "Dinas" likely refers to a fortified place or hillfort, suggesting that the peninsula may have been used as a defensive site in the past. While there are no visible remains of a fort today, the strategic location of the peninsula would have made it an ideal spot for guarding the coastline. The area has also been historically important for fishing and agriculture. The main activity on Dinas Island is walking. The circular walk around the peninsula is approximately 3 miles long and offers stunning views of the coastline, including Fishguard Bay and Newport Bay. Keep an eye out for seals, seabirds, and other wildlife. There are also several secluded coves and beaches that can be accessed from the coastal path. While Dinas Island itself doesn't have specific culinary offerings, the nearby villages of Newport and Fishguard offer a range of pubs and restaurants serving traditional Welsh cuisine and fresh seafood.
