Swanage Pier Guide
Stroll, Fish, and Dive: Discover the Charm of Swanage Pier Guide
Swanage Pier, a Victorian-era gem jutting out into the sparkling waters of Swanage Bay, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the Jurassic Coast. More than just a pretty structure, the pier is a hub of activity, offering stunning views, opportunities for fishing, and even access to some of the best diving spots in the area. Whether you're looking for a relaxing stroll, a family-friendly activity, or an underwater adventure, Swanage Pier has something for everyone. The original pier was built in 1859, primarily for the purpose of transporting stone quarried from the Isle of Purbeck. This stone was used to build parts of London and other major cities. The pier was later extended and rebuilt in 1895, becoming a popular destination for pleasure steamers and tourists. Over the years, it has weathered storms and undergone repairs, but it remains a vital part of Swanage's identity and a testament to Victorian engineering. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities on the pier. Fishing is a popular pastime, with anglers casting their lines in hopes of catching mackerel, bass, and other local species. The pier is also a renowned diving location, offering access to wrecks and reefs teeming with marine life. For those who prefer to stay above water, a leisurely walk to the end of the pier provides breathtaking panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding coastline. Don't forget to grab an ice cream or some fish and chips from the pier's cafe for a classic seaside treat! While not unique to Swanage, the fresh seafood available here is a highlight.
