Step Back in Time: Unearthing Roman Britain at Verulamium Museum Guide
Prepare to be transported back to Roman Britain at the Verulamium Museum, nestled in the heart of St Albans! This fascinating museum showcases the rich history of Verulamium, one of the largest Roman cities in Britain. Whether you're a history buff or simply curious about the past, Verulamium Museum offers a captivating glimpse into life during the Roman occupation. Verulamium's story began long before the Romans arrived, as a settlement of the Catuvellauni tribe. However, it was under Roman rule that the city truly flourished. Following the Roman invasion in AD 43, Verulamium became a significant Roman municipium, granted Roman citizenship. It was even destroyed during Boudicca's revolt in AD 60/61, but was quickly rebuilt and continued to prosper for centuries. The museum's collection is built around the incredible archaeological finds unearthed from the site, offering a tangible connection to this vibrant past. At Verulamium Museum, you can marvel at stunning mosaics, intricate Roman jewelry, and everyday objects that paint a vivid picture of Roman life. Explore reconstructed Roman rooms, learn about the city's architecture, and discover the stories of the people who lived here. Don't miss the famous Sandridge Hoard, a collection of over 150 gold coins discovered nearby. The museum also hosts regular events and activities, including guided tours and family-friendly workshops, making it an engaging experience for all ages.
