The trail's history is intertwined with the landscape it traverses. The coastal section follows ancient smugglers' paths and old coastguard routes, while the inland section winds through moorland dotted with Bronze Age burial mounds and Roman ruins. Robin Hood's Bay, a picturesque village along the route, was once a notorious haven for smugglers, adding a layer of intrigue to your hike. Keep an eye out for the iconic red roofed cottages clinging to the hillside as you descend into the bay. Activities along the Cleveland Way are plentiful. Of course, hiking is the main draw, with options ranging from short day walks to multi-day treks. Explore the charming villages along the way, such as Robin Hood's Bay, Staithes, and Runswick Bay, each with its own unique character and local pubs serving hearty meals. Don't forget to sample some traditional Yorkshire fare, like Yorkshire pudding or a hearty stew, at one of the many pubs and restaurants along the route.
