Rhyd Ddu Path Guide
Conquer Snowdon's Quiet Side: Hike the Rhyd Ddu Path Guide
Escape the crowds and discover the serene beauty of Snowdonia National Park by hiking the Rhyd Ddu Path to the summit of Mount Snowdon. This less-traveled route offers breathtaking panoramic views and a more tranquil experience compared to the popular Llanberis or Pyg Track. Prepare to be captivated by the rugged landscape, the shimmering lakes, and the sense of accomplishment as you reach the highest point in Wales. The Rhyd Ddu Path, once known as the Beddgelert Path, has a history rooted in the local slate quarrying industry. It served as a vital route for transporting slate down the mountain. While not as historically significant as some other Snowdon paths, its charm lies in its relative solitude and the unspoiled nature of the surrounding terrain. The path gradually ascends, offering stunning vistas of the Nantlle Ridge and the surrounding valleys. For tourists, the Rhyd Ddu Path offers a rewarding hiking experience. Be sure to wear appropriate hiking boots and clothing, as the weather in Snowdonia can change rapidly. Pack plenty of water and snacks, and check the weather forecast before you set off. The path is well-maintained but can be rocky in places. Allow approximately 6-7 hours for a round trip. While there aren't specific culinary traditions directly associated with the path itself, the nearby village of Rhyd Ddu offers traditional Welsh pubs and cafes where you can enjoy a hearty meal after your hike.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach Rhyd Ddu is by car. There is a car park available near the start of the path (parking charges apply). Alternatively, you can take the Snowdon Sherpa bus service (S2) from Caernarfon or Beddgelert. Check the Snowdonia National Park website for the most up-to-date bus schedules.
