North Yorkshire Moors Railway Guide

All Aboard! A Journey Through Time on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Guide

Step back in time and experience the golden age of steam travel on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR). This heritage railway offers a scenic journey through the heart of the stunning North Yorkshire Moors National Park, transporting you to a bygone era of elegant locomotives and picturesque landscapes. Whether you're a seasoned railway enthusiast or simply looking for a unique and memorable day out, the NYMR promises an unforgettable adventure. The NYMR's history stretches back to 1836 when George Stephenson, the "Father of Railways," originally designed a line to connect Whitby with Pickering. The current preserved line, however, focuses on the section between Pickering and Grosmont. Over the years, the railway played a vital role in transporting goods and passengers, connecting remote communities and facilitating trade. After closure in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts, a dedicated group of volunteers resurrected the line, preserving a significant piece of railway history for future generations. A ride on the NYMR is more than just a train journey; it's an immersive experience. Hop aboard a beautifully restored steam or diesel train and soak in the breathtaking views of the moors, forests, and charming villages along the way. Explore the historic stations, each with its own unique character and exhibits. Participate in special events throughout the year, such as steam galas, wartime weekends, and Santa specials. For a truly unique experience, consider a footplate experience and learn to drive a steam train! The railway also offers dining experiences, from afternoon tea to hearty meals, served in beautifully restored carriages.
