Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway Guide
Ride the Rails: A Victorian Marvel Connecting Lynton and Lynmouth Guide
Prepare for a unique and breathtaking experience aboard the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, a Victorian-era water-powered funicular railway that connects the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon. This isn't just a mode of transport; it's a journey through history and a chance to witness stunning coastal scenery. Forget the steep walk down (or up!) the cliff; this railway offers a smooth, scenic, and utterly charming alternative. Built in 1890, the Cliff Railway stands as a testament to Victorian engineering ingenuity. Faced with the challenge of connecting the clifftop town of Lynton with the harbour village of Lynmouth, engineers devised a system using water ballast. Two carriages are connected by a cable, and water is pumped into the upper carriage's tank. The weight of the water pulls the upper carriage down, simultaneously raising the lower carriage. This ingenious system requires no external power source, making it an environmentally friendly and historically significant landmark. The railway has been lovingly maintained and continues to operate using the original Victorian mechanism. A ride on the Cliff Railway is a must-do for any visitor to Lynton and Lynmouth. Enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, the Bristol Channel, and the surrounding Exmoor National Park. At the top station in Lynton, explore the charming town with its independent shops and cafes. At the bottom station in Lynmouth, wander along the harbour, sample fresh seafood, or take a stroll along the beach. The railway itself is an attraction, with its beautifully preserved Victorian carriages and the fascinating water-powered mechanism on display. Don't forget your camera – the views are simply unforgettable!
