Peace Bridge Guide
Peace Bridge: Bridging the Divide, Connecting the City Guide
The Peace Bridge is more than just a pedestrian and cycle bridge; it's a symbol of hope, reconciliation, and the evolving spirit of Derry. Spanning the River Foyle, it connects the predominantly nationalist Bogside with the predominantly unionist Waterside, representing a tangible step towards a shared future. A walk across this architectural marvel offers stunning views of the city and a powerful reminder of the journey towards peace. Opened in 2011, the Peace Bridge was designed to improve relations between the two sides of the city, which had been historically divided by political and social tensions. Its elegant, curved design features two sweeping arms that reach out and embrace each other mid-span, symbolizing unity and connection. The bridge quickly became a popular landmark and a focal point for community events, demonstrating its success in fostering a sense of shared identity. Walking or cycling across the Peace Bridge is a must-do activity in Derry. Take your time to soak in the panoramic views of the city, the River Foyle, and the surrounding hills. Read the information panels along the bridge to learn about its history and significance. The bridge is particularly beautiful at night when it's illuminated with colorful lights. Consider starting your walk on one side of the river and exploring the attractions on the other, such as the Guildhall or the Ebrington Square. While the Peace Bridge itself doesn't offer culinary experiences, both sides of the river have a wide array of restaurants and cafes to choose from.
Transportation
The Peace Bridge is easily accessible on foot from both the city center and the Waterside area. Several bus routes also stop near either end of the bridge. For example, routes 1a, 1b, 1c, 2a, 2b, and 2c stop near Foyle Street Bus Centre, which is a short walk from the city-side entrance to the bridge.
