Derry Walls: Walk Through History on Ireland's Only Complete Walled City Guide
Step back in time and explore the magnificent Derry Walls, one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. These iconic walls, encircling the historic city center of Derry/Londonderry, offer a unique perspective on the city's rich and often turbulent past. A walk along the walls is a must-do for any visitor, providing stunning views and a fascinating glimpse into the city's history. The Derry Walls were built in the early 17th century, between 1613 and 1619, as a defense against potential attacks. They were commissioned by the City of London Corporation, hence the city's dual name. The walls have withstood numerous sieges, most famously the Siege of Derry in 1689, when the city held out against the Jacobite forces of King James II for 105 days. The walls are remarkably well-preserved, and they remain a powerful symbol of the city's resilience. Walking the Derry Walls is the main activity, and it's a truly unforgettable experience. The circuit is approximately 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) long and takes about an hour to complete at a leisurely pace. Along the way, you'll encounter numerous historical landmarks, including the four original gates (Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Shipquay Gate, and Butcher's Gate), as well as cannons, watchtowers, and museums. Guided tours are available, offering in-depth historical information. While walking the walls, you'll be surrounded by the vibrant city life below, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a coffee or a meal in one of the many cafes and restaurants within the walled city. Look out for traditional Irish pubs offering hearty meals and live music.
