This unique garden showcases a diverse collection of medicinal herbs and plants, each with a fascinating history and traditional use. Dilston Physic Garden is located on the site of the historic Dilston Hall, once the seat of the Earls of Derwentwater. The hall was forfeited to the crown after the Jacobite rising of 1715, and eventually demolished. The garden itself was established in 1990, inspired by the physic gardens of the 17th and 18th centuries, which were created to cultivate medicinal plants for the training of apothecaries and physicians. The garden aims to preserve and promote the knowledge of traditional herbal medicine, connecting visitors to the rich history of healing practices. A visit to Dilston Physic Garden is a journey of discovery. Explore the themed gardens, each showcasing plants used for specific ailments or purposes. Attend a guided tour to learn about the history and uses of the various herbs and plants. Participate in a workshop to deepen your knowledge of herbal medicine and natural remedies. The garden also hosts events throughout the year, including plant sales, talks, and demonstrations. While there isn't a restaurant on site, the nearby town of Hexham offers a variety of cafes and restaurants. The garden shop sells a selection of herbal teas, tinctures, and other natural products.
