Jerwood Gallery (Hastings Contemporary) Guide
Hastings Contemporary: Modern Art on the Coast Guide
Discover Hastings Contemporary, a striking modern art gallery situated on the Stade, right next to the iconic black net huts. This award-winning building, clad in black timber, is a landmark in itself and houses a diverse collection of modern and contemporary art, with a particular focus on British art. Prepare to be challenged, inspired, and moved by the thought-provoking exhibitions on display. While the gallery itself is relatively new, opening in 2012, its location is steeped in history. As mentioned before, the Stade has been a working fishing beach for centuries. The gallery's presence here represents a fascinating juxtaposition of the traditional and the contemporary, reflecting Hastings' own unique character. The gallery was originally named Jerwood Gallery, but rebranded as Hastings Contemporary in 2019. At Hastings Contemporary, you can explore a range of exhibitions featuring both established and emerging artists. The gallery also hosts workshops, talks, and events throughout the year, providing opportunities to engage with art in a more interactive way. After browsing the art, relax in the gallery's cafe, which offers stunning views of the sea and the Old Town. The gift shop is also worth a visit, offering a selection of art books, prints, and unique souvenirs.
