Glastonbury Tor: Climb to the Heart of Avalon Guide
Prepare for a breathtaking experience at Glastonbury Tor, an iconic landmark that dominates the Somerset landscape. This towering hill, topped by the roofless St Michael's Tower, is shrouded in myth and legend, believed by many to be the Isle of Avalon from Arthurian tales. Whether you're drawn by its spiritual significance, its historical importance, or simply the stunning panoramic views, a climb to the top of Glastonbury Tor is an unforgettable adventure. Glastonbury Tor has a rich and complex history, dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence suggests that the site was used for ritual purposes in the Iron Age and Roman periods. In the medieval era, a church dedicated to St. Michael was built on the Tor, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 13th century. The tower that stands today is the remains of a later church, built in the 14th century. The Tor's association with Arthurian legend and its prominent position in the landscape have made it a powerful symbol of Glastonbury's mystical allure. The main activity at Glastonbury Tor is, of course, the climb to the top! The path can be steep and uneven in places, so wear sturdy shoes. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Somerset Levels, Glastonbury Abbey, and the surrounding countryside. Many visitors choose to meditate, practice yoga, or simply soak in the atmosphere. While there are no food vendors on the Tor itself, you can find plenty of cafes and pubs in Glastonbury offering refreshments after your climb. Consider packing water and snacks for your ascent.
