Step back in time at Inverlochy Castle, a strategically important medieval fortress located near Fort William. The second, and more famous, Battle of Inverlochy took place in 1645 during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, leading a Royalist army, achieved a stunning victory over the Covenanters under Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll. The castle fell into disrepair in the 17th century and was eventually superseded by a new fortress built nearby. Today, Inverlochy Castle is a scheduled ancient monument, open to the public free of charge. Visitors can explore the well-preserved curtain walls, the remains of the corner towers, and the central courtyard.
