Inverlochy Castle: Echoes of Battles Past Guide

Step back in time at Inverlochy Castle, a strategically important medieval fortress located near Fort William. While now a picturesque ruin, Inverlochy Castle stands as a silent witness to centuries of Scottish history, including two significant battles. Explore the castle grounds, imagine the clashes of clans and armies, and soak in the atmosphere of this historic site. The original Inverlochy Castle was built in the 13th century by the Comyn family, Lords of Lochaber. Its strategic location at the mouth of the River Lochy made it a vital stronghold. The castle was the site of two major battles. The first, in 1431, saw the forces of Donald Balloch, a claimant to the Lordship of the Isles, defeat the Royalist army. The second, and more famous, Battle of Inverlochy took place in 1645 during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose, leading a Royalist army, achieved a stunning victory over the Covenanters under Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll. The castle fell into disrepair in the 17th century and was eventually superseded by a new fortress built nearby. Today, Inverlochy Castle is a scheduled ancient monument, open to the public free of charge. Visitors can explore the well-preserved curtain walls, the remains of the corner towers, and the central courtyard. Imagine the sounds of battle and the lives of those who once defended this imposing fortress. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated directly with the castle ruins, the nearby Inverlochy Castle Hotel (a separate, much later construction) offers fine dining experiences showcasing the best of Scottish cuisine.
