Punting on the River Cam Guide
Glide Through Cambridge: Punting on the River Cam Guide
Imagine yourself drifting along a tranquil river, the iconic architecture of Cambridge University rising majestically on either side. Punting on the River Cam is more than just a boat ride; it's an essential Cambridge experience. Whether you choose to be chauffeured by a skilled punter or brave the pole yourself, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the "Backs," the picturesque rear facades of the historic colleges. It's a quintessential British pastime and a fantastic way to soak in the atmosphere of this world-renowned university town. The history of punting on the Cam is intertwined with the history of Cambridge itself. While the exact origins are debated, it's believed that punting evolved from working boats used for transporting goods along the river. By the late 19th century, it had transformed into a leisure activity, popular among students and visitors alike. Today, several companies operate along the river, offering both guided tours and self-hire options. As you glide past King's College Chapel, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Wren Library, you'll be transported back in time, imagining the scholars and poets who once strolled these very banks. A punt trip offers a variety of experiences. Opt for a chauffeured tour to learn about the history and architecture of the colleges from a knowledgeable guide. Alternatively, rent a punt and try your hand at navigating the river yourself – be prepared for some wobbly moments and potential collisions! Pack a picnic to enjoy on board, or stop at one of the riverside pubs for a refreshing drink. For a truly memorable experience, consider a sunset punt, where the golden light bathes the colleges in a magical glow. While on the river, keep an eye out for the local wildlife, including ducks, swans, and even the occasional kingfisher.
Transportation
The main punting stations are located along the River Cam, near the city centre. From Cambridge train station, it's approximately a 20-minute walk to the Mill Lane punting area. Several bus routes also operate from the station to the city centre, including the Citi 1, Citi 7, and Citi 8, from where you can easily walk to the river. Parking in Cambridge city centre can be limited and expensive, so public transport is recommended.
