The current Belfast Castle isn't the first to stand on this site. The original castle, built by the Normans in the 12th century, was located in the city center. It was replaced in the 17th century by a stone and timber structure, which unfortunately burned down in 1708. The present castle, designed in the Scottish Baronial style, was completed in 1870 by the 3rd Marquess of Donegall. It was gifted to the city of Belfast in 1934 and has since become a popular tourist attraction and event venue. Legend has it that the castle will only survive as long as there is a cat on the premises, so keep an eye out for the resident felines! Visitors can explore the castle's beautiful gardens, which offer stunning views of Belfast Lough and the city. Inside, you can wander through the visitor center, which details the castle's history, or enjoy a meal at the Cellar Restaurant. For a more active experience, take a hike through Cave Hill Country Park, which offers various trails with varying levels of difficulty. Don't miss the iconic Napoleon's Nose, a rock formation that resembles the famous emperor. While at the castle, be sure to try some traditional Irish fare at the Cellar Restaurant. Think hearty stews, fresh seafood, and of course, a pint of Guinness.
