Barter Books: A Literary Haven in a Historic Train Station Guide

Step into a book lover's paradise at Barter Books, a truly unique second-hand bookstore housed in Alnwick's magnificent Victorian railway station. More than just a place to buy books, Barter Books is an experience, a destination where the aroma of old paper mingles with the charm of a bygone era. Lose yourself amongst towering shelves, discover hidden literary gems, and relax by the crackling fire in this enchanting space. The building itself has a rich history, serving as Alnwick's railway station from 1887 until its closure in 1968. In 1991, Stuart and Mary Manley transformed the abandoned station into Barter Books, breathing new life into the historic structure. The name "Barter Books" reflects the original concept of exchanging books, although now you can also purchase them outright. The discovery of a "Keep Calm and Carry On" poster in a box of old books propelled the bookstore to international fame, and reproductions of the iconic poster are now sold worldwide. At Barter Books, you can browse an extensive collection of second-hand books, ranging from classic literature to contemporary fiction, history, and art. Settle into a comfortable armchair by the fire with a good book and a cup of tea from the station buffet. Children will love the model railway that runs around the bookstore. The store also hosts events and readings throughout the year. While Barter Books doesn't have its own culinary offerings beyond the station buffet, Alnwick offers a variety of cafes and restaurants within walking distance.
