Safranbolu's history stretches back to ancient times, but its golden age arrived during the Ottoman Empire. The town flourished as a vital trading post on the Silk Road, connecting the East and West. Wealthy merchants built elaborate mansions, showcasing their prosperity and status. These houses, characterized by their intricate woodwork, overhanging bay windows, and red-tiled roofs, are the defining feature of Safranbolu's architectural heritage. The town also played a significant role in saffron cultivation, hence its name, "Safranbolu" meaning "Saffron City." Today, Safranbolu Old Town offers a wealth of activities for tourists. Explore the Kaymakamlar Evi (Governor's House), a meticulously restored Ottoman mansion that provides insight into the lifestyle of a wealthy family. Visit the Cinci Han and Hamam, a caravanserai and Turkish bath that once served weary travelers. Wander through the bazaar, where you can find local handicrafts, saffron products, and traditional Turkish delights. Don't forget to sample the local cuisine, which features dishes like Safranbolu Lokumu (Turkish Delight with saffron) and Peruhi (a type of Turkish ravioli).
