Ihlara Valley is a stunning canyon carved by the Melendiz River in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. The Ihlara Valley has been inhabited since the 4th century AD, serving as a refuge for early Christians seeking to escape persecution. They carved numerous churches and monasteries into the soft volcanic rock of the canyon walls, decorating them with vibrant frescoes depicting biblical scenes. These rock-cut churches provide a valuable insight into the religious art and life of the Byzantine era. The valley's remote location and natural defenses made it an ideal sanctuary for centuries. The main activity in Ihlara Valley is hiking along the Melendiz River. The trail winds through the canyon, passing by numerous rock-cut churches, including the Ağaçaltı Church (Church Under the Tree), Sümbüllü Church (Hyacinth Church), and Yılanlı Church (Snake Church). You can choose to hike the entire length of the valley (approximately 14 km) or opt for a shorter section. After your hike, enjoy a traditional Turkish meal at one of the riverside restaurants in the village of Belisirma. Try the gözleme (Turkish pancake) or the trout, a local specialty.
Transportation
From Göreme or other towns in Cappadocia, you can take a local bus or dolmuş (shared minibus) to Ihlara village, which is the starting point for the hike. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi or join a guided tour that includes transportation. Some tours start at the Selime Monastery and hike down into the valley.
