Green Mosque (Yeşil Cami) Guide
A Masterpiece of Ottoman Architecture: The Green Mosque of İznik Guide
The Green Mosque, or Yeşil Cami, is a stunning example of early Ottoman architecture and a must-see landmark in İznik. Its distinctive green-tiled minaret makes it instantly recognizable and a focal point of the town. The mosque's intricate details and serene atmosphere offer a peaceful respite and a glimpse into the artistic achievements of the Ottoman era. Construction of the Green Mosque began in 1378 by Çandarlı Kara Halil Hayreddin Pasha, a prominent Ottoman statesman. However, construction was interrupted by his death and completed by his son, Çandarlı Ali Pasha, in 1391. The mosque's design reflects the influence of both Seljuk and early Ottoman styles. The green tiles that adorn the minaret are a later addition, giving the mosque its distinctive name. The mosque has undergone several restorations throughout its history, preserving its architectural integrity. Visitors can admire the Green Mosque's beautiful architecture, including its intricate tilework, carved wooden doors, and elegant dome. The mosque is an active place of worship, so visitors should dress respectfully (covering shoulders and knees) and be mindful of prayer times. While visiting, take time to explore the surrounding area, which features traditional Ottoman houses and charming streets. İznik is known for its pottery, so be sure to browse the local shops for unique souvenirs.
