Yamdrok Lake, also known as Yamdrok Yumtso, is one of the three largest sacred lakes in Tibet. Legend has it that if the lake dries up, Tibet will no longer be habitable. The lake is also associated with various deities and is a popular pilgrimage site. The Samding Monastery, located on a peninsula jutting into the lake, is historically significant as the seat of the only female incarnate lama in Tibet. Visitors to Yamdrok Lake can enjoy stunning views from the Khamba La Pass, which offers a panoramic vista of the lake and surrounding mountains. You can also drive along the lakeshore, stopping at various viewpoints to take photos and soak in the scenery. Some tours include a visit to the Samding Monastery. Transportation
Yamdrok Lake is accessible by road from Lhasa. Most organized tours include transportation to the lake as part of a larger itinerary. It's also possible to hire a private car or taxi from Lhasa. The journey takes approximately 2-3 hours. There are no direct public buses to Yamdrok Lake, but you can take a bus towards Shigatse and ask to be dropped off near the lake, then hire a local taxi for the remaining distance.
