Golden Sands and Mermaid Tales: Laem Samila Beach, Songkhla Guide

Laem Samila Beach is Songkhla's most iconic and beloved beach, a perfect blend of natural beauty and local charm. With its pristine golden sands, swaying pine trees, and the famous Golden Mermaid statue, Laem Samila is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Songkhla. Whether you're looking to relax on the beach, take a refreshing dip in the sea, or simply soak in the vibrant atmosphere, Laem Samila offers something for everyone. The Golden Mermaid statue, officially named *Nangเงือกทอง* (Nang Ngueak Thong), is the symbol of Songkhla and a popular photo spot. Legend has it that a beautiful mermaid would often come to the beach to comb her hair with a golden comb. One day, a fisherman stole her comb, and she was never seen again. The statue serves as a reminder of the beauty and mystery of the sea. Beyond the mermaid, Laem Samila also features a cat and mouse statue, representing two islands just off the coast. Activities at Laem Samila are plentiful. You can relax on the beach, swim in the sea (though be mindful of currents), or take a stroll along the promenade. There are also vendors selling souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. For a unique experience, consider taking a boat trip to the nearby islands of Ko Nu and Ko Maeo (Cat and Mouse Islands). Laem Samila is also a great place to sample local street food. You'll find vendors selling everything from grilled seafood and *Som Tum* (papaya salad) to *Khanom Krok* (coconut pancakes) and refreshing fruit shakes. Be sure to try the local specialty, *Kai Yang Wichianburi*, grilled chicken marinated in a special blend of spices.
