Wat Ratchaburana Guide

Unearth Treasures at Wat Ratchaburana: A Royal Temple with a Crypt Guide

Wat Ratchaburana, another prominent temple within Ayutthaya Historical Park, offers a unique blend of architectural beauty and historical intrigue. Unlike some of the other temples, Wat Ratchaburana boasts a well-preserved central prang (Khmer-style tower) and a fascinating crypt that visitors can explore. This temple provides a deeper understanding of Ayutthaya's artistic and religious heritage. Built in 1424 by King Borommarachathirat II, Wat Ratchaburana commemorates his two elder brothers who died in a succession dispute. The temple's most remarkable feature is its crypt, discovered in 1957, which contained a wealth of treasures, including gold artifacts, jewelry, and Buddha images. These artifacts are now displayed in the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum, but the crypt itself remains open for exploration. Visitors can climb the steep steps of the prang for panoramic views of the surrounding area. Descending into the crypt offers a unique opportunity to see original murals and experience the temple's hidden depths. Remember to dress respectfully when visiting religious sites. While not directly related to the temple, Ayutthaya is known for its delicious Roti Sai Mai, a sweet crepe-like dessert filled with colorful cotton candy-like strands, which can be found at local markets.

Transportation

Wat Ratchaburana is easily accessible by tuk-tuk or bicycle from Ayutthaya city center. Similar to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, tuk-tuks offer a convenient and direct route, while bicycles allow for a more independent exploration of the historical park. Consider combining your visit to Wat Ratchaburana with other nearby temples for a comprehensive Ayutthaya experience.
