Prison Island Guide
Prison Island: From Quarantine to Tourist Haven Guide
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located just off the coast of Stone Town, Zanzibar. Despite its name, it was never actually used as a prison. Today, it's a popular tourist destination offering a glimpse into Zanzibar's history and a chance to encounter giant tortoises. The island's history is quite intriguing. In the 1860s, it was purchased by the British First Minister of Zanzibar, Lloyd Mathews, who intended to use it as a prison for rebellious slaves. However, this plan never materialized. Instead, in 1893, it was decided to build a prison on the island, but this time to house violent criminals from the mainland. Again, this plan was abandoned. The island was then used as a quarantine station for yellow fever outbreaks. The remnants of the quarantine buildings can still be seen today. In the 1920s, the island became home to a population of Aldabra giant tortoises, a gift from the British governor of the Seychelles. Today, Prison Island offers a variety of activities for tourists. The main attraction is undoubtedly the giant tortoise sanctuary, where you can observe and even interact with these gentle giants. You can also explore the remnants of the quarantine station and learn about the island's history. Snorkeling and swimming in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island are popular activities, and the beach is perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Boat trips to and from the island often include opportunities for dolphin watching. While Prison Island doesn't have specific culinary traditions, you can enjoy fresh seafood at the small restaurant on the island.
